you have to use curl defining mous to get thr crimpy scrunchy-ness. try braiding your hair while wet and let it dry that way (very crimpy results)

you can blowdry your hair.

put some shine serum in it.

then use a crimping iron.

or

after getting out the shower.

put some gel in it.

then french braid it.

then take it out in the morning.

i do it all the time and it comes out great.

while damp, spray either a light hairspray or a gel or mousse then fix your hair into a tight bun or with rollers. let it set for about an hour and a half to two hours or until the hair is completely dry. if not, use a diffuser to speed up the drying process of your hair while on rollers or a tight bun. after that, you'll get a bouncy hair with soft waves or curls:) also, its important to NOT COMB YOUR HAIR after as this would damage hairstrands and make your hair frizzy.

The best thing I have found is to buy those plush wiry old fashioned hair twists...and put them in your hair at nite wet hair really holds em in... and u can use some gel but maybe not need to at all and u will wake up with bouncing curls... I have to do this I have very straight hair, and I got better and better working how i wanted to put the curls with practice,, its fun

Truthfully, I would go with a perm if I were you. My hair is the same way, but even if I spray every product known to man on it and try to curl it, it never holds. So I would go with a perm. There are different degrees of perms. You can get it ultra curly or just wavy. The best thing is, that when you get a perm, it is easier to straighten it with a flat iron when it is curly than to curl it when it is straight.

shower at night, put about 15 braids in, and the next morning, unbraid them and rub some pomade in your palms and gently seperate any clingy strands :)
